From hitting bottom to moral freedom

From the September 1997 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christ Jesus not only taught that man is the child of God; he showed that this understanding leads to salvation.

Spiritual qualities such as intelligence, purity, joy, and love identify us as the immortal offspring of God, Spirit. As often as we see good expressed, we see man's spiritual sonship asserting itself. Anyone who gains a clearer understanding of the actual, Godlike nature of man is empowered to bring into experience evidence of that nature right where it seems absent. Identifying ourselves with our divine Parent, as His expression, we just naturally find our thoughts and actions becoming more indicative of our real being. And we find that nothing can override this growing demonstration of our blessed and sacred relation to God.

An understanding of man's true, Godlike selfhood abolishes any false sense of manhood that would hide the divine reality of creation. For example, a young man I know had been badly abused by both of his parents from the time he was a small child. He left home as a teenager and lived on and off the streets. He became addicted to drugs and alcohol. In addition, he engaged in a homosexual lifestyle as well as petty crime to support his addictions. Yet ever since he was a child, he had tried to find spiritual comfort and had investigated many different religions. None seemed to provide more than temporary solace.
