Why the sales of Science and Health are vital

From the October 1998 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Mary Baker Eddy once wrote: "The motive of my earliest labors has never changed. It was to relieve the sufferings of humanity by a sanitary system that should include all moral and religious reform." Retrospection and Introspection, p. 30 Her major work, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, presents the system of scientific, Christian healing she discovered. She cared deeply that its message would reach the widest possible audience. To this end, she once asked The Christian Science Board of Directors to pray twice daily for the receptivity of people to her book, and for their willingness to buy it. See The Christian Science Journal, July 1997, p. 56

From the Office of the Publisher,
the Writings of Mary Baker Eddy

As an attendant at a Christian Science Reading Room, I was asked to join in this prayer; but as I was praying, I realized I needed to understand why buying Science and Health was so important. People frequently came into our Reading Room with needs that this book could meet, but I often jumped in and said, "Well, you know you can borrow the book from our lending library at no charge." They did. And then they returned it.
