Cultivating spiritual poise

From the July 1998 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Peter, one of Christ Jesus' disciples, loved God. Peter also loved Jesus. This love was evident. Peter was eager to follow his Master and to obey God. However, Peter was impetuous. Impetuousness would have us acting suddenly with little thought. We can heal this tendency by learning to wait on God, divine Mind, to lead us step by step.

A reflection, by its very nature, waits on the ... person or object in front of the mirror before it acts. The reflection cannot choose to act apart from what it reflects. Man is God's reflection. This is our true nature as His likeness. Therefore waiting on God is natural and appropriate. We should wait for Him to lead us before making a decision, and even as we're daily considering what to do or say.

In an article entitled "The Way," Mary Baker Eddy writes, "For Jesus to walk the water was scientific, insomuch as he was able to do this; but it is neither wisdom nor Science for poor humanity to step upon the Atlantic until we can walk on the water." And she continues, referring to Peter, who once attempted to walk on the water: "Peter's impetuosity was rebuked. He had to learn from experience; so have we." Miscellaneous Writings, p. 359
