Some Christian Scientists may wonder why they should get involved in church work. After all, you can study the Lesson-Sermon (from the Christian Science Quarterly) every day, attend Sunday and Wednesday church services, subscribe for and read the Christian Science periodicals. You know that if you're faithful in your study and prayer, you will grow in your spiritual understanding of God and man. Isn't this enough? Besides, you probably lead a busy life and feel you don't have time for church work. Some people enjoy serving in church. Fine! Let them do it. Why should you get involved?
I know all about that kind of reasoning. That's the way I felt when I first joined a Christian Science branch church. In fact, I was even reluctant to join for a while. I didn't want to be tied down. I had lots of excuses. I worked long hours at my business. I had a very responsible job. I needed time at home with my family. I decided I would get involved in church work sometime later.
But then a change in my outlook developed. I began to see that if I were really going to be a Christian, I had to be earnest in meeting the demands that Christ Jesus placed on his followers. He said that we ought to be willing workers, and that the laborers were few. He said we should preach the gospel and heal the sick.
