During Easter vacation from school last year my husband and I took our toddler to the playground for the first time that spring. She was having a delightful time until a false step left her flat on her face on the blacktop. She cried, and her nose bled slightly, but otherwise she appeared fine. Since she seemed more interested in playing than in being comforted, I did not give the incident much thought.
The next morning when she woke, however, the appearance of her nose was alarming. I immediately began to pray, and I spent much of the morning acknowledging her true identity as a child of God and trying not to examine her face too closely She didn't appear to be in any pain, and I was grateful for that.
When she fell asleep for her nap that day, I reached for my Bible and Science and Health to read the Bible Lesson (found in the Christian Science Quarterly) and pray to overcome my fear. There were many citations that comforted me, and as I listened for inspiration, I understood that God is her loving Parent and that He would never allow her to be injured or to fall from His care. Her relationship with God is unbroken and constant, and she could never be touched by an accident, which is no part of God's kingdom. The thought also came to me that neither of us could suffer from her adventurous and fearless nature. She was free to run, explore, and express joy because she is always under God's supervision and care.
