After Reading the book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy for the first time some years ago, I was filled with enthusiasm and love. Like a thirsty sponge, I eagerly read through all the Christian Science periodicals I could get my hands on, soaking up the articles and particularly the inspiring testimonies of healing. Very soon, I had the opportunity to put into practice the spirit of the letter that I was reading.
It was dusk. The thick hedge outside our house needed trimming. My husband was working overseas, the children were too young to help me, and I was too impatient to wait for the next day. Finding the hedge trimmers in the garage was no problem, but I could not find my gardening gloves. While I was searching for the gloves, which I never found, little warnings flashed through my thought, such as "Don't do this without gloves. Don't do this at night. Remember the neighbors' comments, that the bats—which we could see every night circling and swooping around the streetlight poles—love to nest in thick, dark hedges. " Paying no heed to these thoughts, I began clipping away, quickly and noisily, in a frenzy to finish this task before it became too dark to see.
