WHOLENESS RESTORED

Why I turned to God for healing

From the December 1999 issue of The Christian Science Journal

ABOUT EIGHTEEN YEARS ago, a dear friend was helping me to overcome the emotional pain brought on by a divorce. She would offer simple but profound ideas about God that I found very comforting. One evening, I was talking to her husband about some fears I had, and he, too, gave me some helpful ideas about God's love for me. During my conversation with him, I realized that some uncomfortable flu symptoms had vanished while we had been talking. I was so surprised at this that I mentioned it to him. He said, "Well, you've just had your first healing."

My friend began to tell me about the spiritual healings that take place in Christian Science. He explained that fear is a cause of illness and that when our fears are quieted through the understanding of God's love and care for man, we can expect inharmonious conditions to fade away.

After my healing of flu symptoms, I began to wonder if prayer could help my son. When he was two, he had been diagnosed with chronic asthma. The doctor had explained that he would never be healed of this disease, but that we could try to control it with the use of several different medications. During the three years following the diagnosis, there were several attacks that ended in hospital stays for my son.
