Inspired church activity

From the June 1999 issue of The Christian Science Journal

For the past several years our Christian Science Society has been giving specific attention to understanding and fulfilling more diligently our responsibility of following the directives of the Manual of The Mother Church. The board members took up its study in earnest. We endeavored to understand the By-Laws by practicing their provisions—and thus to demonstrate how the institution of Church is "rousing the dormant understanding from material beliefs to the apprehension of spiritual ideas,"  Science and Health, p. 583 as Mrs. Eddy says of Church in Science and Health. Our Wednesday evening testimony meeting grew from a once-a-month event to a weekly meeting. An occasional lecture by a member of The Christian Science Board of Lectureship became an annual event. A dormant Sunday School became active again with two classes. The continuing desire to understand and implement the vision of the Manual for our society encouraged us to examine the role of our Reading Room, which was then located in the church edifice. At first the idea of establishing the Reading Room outside of the church building met with various reasons not to do so. But misgivings gave way to spiritual inspiration. One by one the needs were met, and steps for the relocation of the Reading Room became apparent. When space was suddenly available on the village square, it proved to be the "acceptable time." Every member was present at the general meeting called for this purpose and voted in favor of the project.
