REPORT OF 1999 ANNUAL MEETING

The spiritual leaven at work in the sciences

From the July 1999 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The Annual Meeting of The First Church of Christ, Scientist, was held in Boston on a sunny, hot June afternoon. At 1:30 p.m. the outgoing President, Jon L. Harder, of Bristol, Rhode Island, opened the meeting by reading passages from the Bible and from the writings of Mary Baker Eddy. A correction appeared in the September 1999 Journal: "In the July journal the outgoing President of The First Church of Christ, Scientist, should have been listed as Jon G. Harder in the Report of the 1999 Annual Meeting. His name was incorrectly listed as Jon L. Harder. The journal regrets this error." After silent prayer and the audible repetition of the Lord's Prayer, the members joined in singing Hymn 297 from the Christian Science Hymnal.

Mr. Harder announced the names of the church officers for the year ahead. Jean Stark Hebenstreit, C.S.B., of Kansas City, Missouri, will serve as President of The Mother Church. She is a former member of The Christian Science Board of Directors who has also served as President of the Board of Education, as a member of the Board of Trustees of The Christian Science Publishing Society, and on The Christian Science Board of Lectureship.

Mrs. Hebenstreit spoke as follows: "As we gather together for this Annual Meeting of The Mother Church in the latter part of this century, there is much thought being directed toward the millennium—and rightly so. However, in taking stock of all the good the past has had, we can rejoice that in this era there has been a notable falling away of limitations, as well as productive and exciting advances for mankind and an escalating inquiry into the dynamics of spirituality, all appearing on the ever-widening horizon since Mary Baker Eddy's discovery of Christian Science.
