TAKING STOCK

You are worthy!

My friend had worked for success, but she felt it had eluded her.

From the July 1999 issue of The Christian Science Journal

What shows your worthiness in life? Is it the job you have, or how much money you make, or what car you drive, or what house you live in, or what clothes you wear?

A friend of mine thought it was such things. As hard as she had tried, she hadn't achieved what she believed were the things that make a person successful, and she often wondered why others were apparently worthy of these things and she was not. Then on an airplane, she had a simple experience that changed her thought.

It was a full flight, and as she approached the aisle seat she had requested, she saw an attache case on it. The middle seat was empty so she decided to sit there until the case was claimed, and then she could take the aisle seat. When the owner of the case appeared, he explained that there was some confusion regarding his seating arrangement, and the airline had given him the middle seat. The man seemed a bit annoyed, and so my friend said, "Why don't you take the aisle seat, and I'll sit here." He expressed surprise and sat down. Just then an airline employee hurried on the plane and apologized to the man for the mixup. He gave him a ticket stub that indicated his right seat assignment, which was in first class. The man turned to my friend and said, "Wouldn't you like to go home first class? He continued, "You were so kind to give up your aisle seat to me and take the uncomfortable seat that I want you to take my seat in first class." Then he ushered her to his seat, handed her his ticket stub, and said, "Here, this is your seat, and don't let anybody tell you differently."
