A friend and I decided to go into the restaurant business together. Since he had another business of his own and could devote no time to the restaurant, our agreement was that he would provide the necessary financing and I would supply the management. To keep expenses to a minimum, I would also be doing the cooking and baking, and keeping the property in good order.

In meeting these requirements, I put in a longer than usual work day, sleeping only five or six hours each night. I wasn't sure how long I could keep doing this, so I turned to Science and Health to find the answers. The first thing I read was the opening statement of the Preface: "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings" (p. vii). Another passage later in the book seemed to me to describe some of those blessings. It says that an understanding of the laws of God and His government of the universe gives us greater endurance and capacities (see p. 128). These were the answers I needed.

My first thought was, "Is there anything to be grateful for?"
