What are we praying for?

Our basic need for is for spiritual ideas—and God always gives us those.

From the February 2001 issue of The Christian Science Journal

There was a time when too little money was a daily problem for me. I spent a lot of time praying to better understand God's abundance. But my eye was on gaining the material things I needed.

One morning I began to study the weekly Bible Lesson in the Christian Science Quarterly. The subject was "Substance," and one Bible verse stood out so vividly that I felt God's word was speaking directly to me. It said, "Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you."John 6:27.

What an eye-opener this was! I realized what was hindering my progress—I'd been trying to get material things instead of gaining spiritual understanding, which provides us with the only true substance.
