A PLACE FOR GRATITUDE

Thanks-Giving Square

From the February 2001 issue of The Christian Science Journal

We're pleased to be able to share the following talk, given by on behalf of The Christian Science Board of Directors at the 25-year celebration of Thanks-Giving Square last November in Dallas. Mrs. Harris's talk has been slightly edited for print.

I'm grateful for the privilege of being here this evening to celebrate the 25th year of Thanks-Giving Square with all of you. This spot has truly made an impact worldwide. It is a treasure Dallas provides to the world. Its sculptural tower of gratitude figuratively soars far above the taller buildings around it.

I visited the Square last week. In that time of dusk when the streets were emptying and the lights in the buildings were beginning to outshine the setting sun, I stepped into its goodness. Quietly—and with dignity and courtesy—a man sheltered in a corner there gathered his small store of possessions and moved away. I hadn't intended to disturb whatever shelter and thanksgiving he had found there. Everyone's gratitude is valuable.
