There's always a way out

The door to freedom is open.

From the March 2001 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A few years ago, a family of birds and a large pussycat helped me better understand God's saving and protecting power, which is available to everyone every moment.

One day I was walking in a garden that had a summer house, a shelter made primarily of glass. The entrance was a wide opening several feet across and high. Approaching this shelter, I saw three sparrows frantically flitting about inside. They were obviously trying to get out, but instead were just banging themselves against the glass. Closer observation revealed a large cat quietly observing the birds.

The birds weren't actually in any danger. They could easily have flown out and away unharmed, because the cat was on the outside of the glass house, nowhere near the entryway. Although the birds' safety was clear to me, they acted as though they were in the presence of a mortal enemy from which there was no escaping. I can only guess that their overwhelming fear kept them from seeing that the way out was right at hand.
