This article was written by a woman in Cuba. It was originally published in the April 1996 issue of The Herald of Christian Science (Spanish Edition). The experience illustrates how practical the Science of being was—and still is—for people facing difficult personal and financial conditions. The author has asked to remain anonymous.
My husband had a farm with a rice field, where around 25 to 30 workers gathered the harvest twice a year. When my husband died, I felt deeply depressed, but in spite my grief, I knew that "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." Psalm 46:1. I clung to my faith in God, convinced that we are never alone. Three days after my husband passed on, I went to the bank, because we needed a loan to operate the farm.
I prayed and trusted in God's care. I told the manager that I would take over the farm, even though I was a music teacher in a public school and had no experience with raising rice. He looked at me in disbelief. It was clear that he didn't think I could do this. I explained that when my husband began the business, he didn't know how to do it either. Nevertheless, he learned along the way. I said I felt capable of learning, too.
