SINCE I WAS FIVE YEARS OLD, Christian Science has been integral to my life. Through the study of the Bible and Science and Health, and application of their teachings, I've had many healings. My relationships have improved, and I've made good career decisions. I've also had many instances when I felt God's protection, one of which took place a year and a half ago.
Early one morning, the telephone rang. It was a neighbor calling to say that she thought some loggers were cutting trees on our property about a half-mile away. It seemed right to check on the situation, so I put on wetweather gear and started to walk up the hillside. We were living on heavily forested land in Washington state, where the trees grow so close together that it's difficult to see through them. I could hear the loggers at work with their chainsaws, and knew that I was close to them, but couldn't see them.
Suddenly, the chainsaws stopped, and there was a resounding crack. I looked up to see an old-growth cedar, probably 150 feet tall, slowly falling straight toward me. I was downhill from the tree, knee-deep in tangled limbs of trees that had already been felled. I couldn't move, and even if I could have, it wasn't clear where to move. I thought, "God is with thee" (1 Sam. 10:7), and I recalled reading that in the weekly Bible Lesson earlier that week. I realized that since God was with me, I was safe, protected.
