What changes and what doesn't

A Paris church holds services on a barge.

From the February 2002 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Things Change. Take this barge on the river Seine, in Paris. It used to be a grain carrier before it became a restaurant and discotheque. Nowadays, in addition to being both of those, it's also a Christian Science church—at least on Wednesday nights and Sunday mornings, when services are held.

I'm a member of Second Church of Christ, Scientist, Paris. Our auditorium is in the lower part of the barge, with portholes along the walls on both sides. At first, it was a little strange to feel the floor moving slightly under our feet during the services whenever the bateaux mouches—the large sightseeing boats—passed by with their flocks of tourists. We were especially aware of the wake of the boats while we were standing up to sing! But we all love our present site, and our visitors do, too. We feel gently rocked in God's love.

The Sunday School children meet in the restaurant area. Even though they're surrounded by large windows and the ever-changing sights along the Seine, they're not as distracted as you might think. In fact, for some reason, they're more attentive than before.
