"My chapter" —

THESE TWO WORDS, written by Mary Baker Eddy between verses in her Bible, give a poignant and powerful insight into her life. Her penciled note appears at the close of the Gospel of St. John and reprises its sixth chapter — a chapter that includes some of the deepest and most chal lenging of Jesus' teachings. The holy ideas he was preaching were so profound that some of his followers said, "This is an hard saying; who can hear it?" and they "walked no more with him."  John 6:60. 66. A similar sadness touched Mrs. Eddy's life. Some of her early and promising students turned away — unable or unwilling to understand and stand with her during her times of teaching, writing, and founding. In those alone moments she turned to her Bible as her guide, her solace, and as a safe refuge for her deep feelings and hopes for humanity.

Looking back on the 1866 healing that marked her discovery of Christian Science, she wrote, "For three years after my discovery, I sought the solution of this problem of Mind-healing, searched the Scriptures and read little else, kept aloof from society, and devoted time and energies to discovering a positive rule."  Science and Health, p. 109.
