Recently, during a busy time at work, someone knocked a metal file rack off a counter and onto my hand. It was not an especially heavy object, but the accident occurred in the middle of an already stressful day. I was feeling completely victimized by my surroundings—both mentally stressed out and now physically hurt. The skin on my hand was broken and a lump was beginning to form. I was also in quite a bit of pain.
At this point I remembered that, as a loved child of God, I could not be victimized by anything. God would never cause one of His children to be overwhelmed or hurt. And because God is infinite and all-powerful, nothing else had the power to cause these conditions either. I thought of this statement from Science and Health: "Under divine Providence there can be no accidents, since there is no room for imperfection in perfection" (p. 424).
As I continued to pray in this way, I started to feel less and less like a victim of circumstances and more and more like the loved child of God. The pain in my hand subsided, and my day at work began to improve. I learned from this experience to watch my thoughts and not believe—even for a moment—that I can be subject to accidents.
