Prayer, practicality, and progress

From the November 2003 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Ask Olivia Alexander why she joined her church, and she'll tell you a story of a membership focused on healing. "They responded to my need for help when it was greatest," said Olivia. "And they responded in a way that was practical—and healing."

For Olivia, the road back to Christian Science—and eventually church—wasn't an easy one. It was long and full of ups and downs, but after thirteen years away from Christian Science, she was ready, as she put it, "to come home."

"I had one friend who stood by me faithfully during the years when I was trying to find my way," Olivia related. "One day, she invited me to a lunch with a bunch of friends who were also Christian Scientists. That lunch changed me. I thought, 'These people are so happy, so full of life, and here I am dealing with all these physical problems.' I wanted the kind of peace I was seeing in them." Inspired and encouraged by what she'd witnessed at luch, Olivia found herself moving slowly but surely toward "home."
