When she first got to college,
was shy and reserved. "I was happy just blending into the background, being a face in the crowd," she says. But by the end of her junior year, Kerri had given a speech to the entire student body. Kerri talked with the Journal's Jenny Sawyer about what changed—and the surprising turns her life took once she realized what she had to offer.Tell me about "Kerri, the college freshman." What were you like when you first got to school?
I was pretty self-conscious, pretty insecure. Deep down, I think I knew I had something to offer, but I was too unsure of myself to let that shine. I didn't like being in the spotlight, so in classes I rarely spoke up. I didn't have the confidence to be anything more than part of the scenery. And I definitely wasn't very involved in school activities.
