Sikhism

Teachings of enlightenment, equality, and human charity

From the April 2004 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Living An Honest Life. Defending against injustice. Sharing with others. These are principles the Sikh religion stands for. But recent crimes perpetrated against Sikhs all over the world show that the general public's idea of this religion is still unclear.

The Times of India reports that since 9/11 there have been more than 300 cases of hate crimes and discrimination against Sikhs in the US alone. There's the well-publicized story of the man mistaken for an Arab who was murdered just days after 9/11. And a December 2003 episode, in which an elderly Sikh man in the United Kingdom was beaten and left for dead in his own place of worship, also indicates the need for a better understanding and acceptance of this faith.

Sikhs are often confused with Muslims and Hindus, but their religion is separate from both.
