TEEN TALK

LET'S GET METAPHYSICAL

From the February 2005 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When headed to the University of Pennsylvania as a freshman he was ready, he says, to establish his independence. Stephen talked with the Journal's Jenny Sawyer about what happened next.

So it's your freshman year. For the first time, you aren't living with your parents, and in essence, you have the freedom to do whatever you want. What was that like for you?

There was definitely a climate of experimentation that I'd never encountered before—heavy drinking, sex, the stuff that often goes on at college. Other students were doing things that I'd never even heard about—let alone seen or experienced. And while I didn't just follow the crowd, I also didn't want to believe or do things anymore just because I'd been taught to think or act in certain ways.
