YOUR QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Following the example set by the question-and-answer columns in the early Journals, when Mary Baker Eddy was Editor, this column will respond to general queries from Journal readers—such as the one above—with responses from Journal readers. It will generally not cover questions about how to interpret statements in Mrs. Eddy's writings. There's more information at the end of the column about how to submit questions.

When you're praying for guidance on a big decision and you...

From the February 2005 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When you're praying for guidance on a big decision and you don't seem to be getting a clear message from God on which road to take, how do you know the right thing to do?

A1 I remember praying for guidance about whether to quit my job. My family needed the extra income, but I was so unhappy in this job, feeling unappreciated, overworked, and underpaid.

I prayed and prayed, but received no clear sense of direction. Then I took two weeks' holiday and dedicated the time to feeling more certain that God was caring for me and guiding me. I realized I didn't need to wait for a thunderbolt-type answer, but in the stillness of prayer I would feel a "rightness" about following through with one course of action. At the same time, I realized I had received my answer. I'd felt the very assurance I'd been longing for while praying —peace about leaving the job. Although feelings of fear sometimes surfaced, I knew I could go forward acknowledging God's care and being grateful for what He'd already given me. And looking back on it today, I can see that this was the right decision.
