SQUARE ONE

From the July 2005 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I DON'T PRETEND TO BE AN EXPERT ON OVERCOMING TIME AND SPACE. But I did have one experience that gave me a good idea about where to start.

I was a stressed-out high-school senior on a tight deadline. An important paper for a demanding teacher was due on Monday morning, and I'd set aside Sunday to write it.

Then a friend called. She had her own plans for Monday—an unpleasant and somewhat frightening dental procedure. She was feeling scared and alone and judged about some of the choices she'd made. Would I come to a church service with her after my Sunday School class, she wanted to know. As bad as the timing was, I knew this friend needed to feel love, and I felt in my heart that God was asking me to be the one to express it. So I agreed.
