NEW BALANCE

From the July 2005 issue of The Christian Science Journal

One day it hit me. I could barely buckle my belt, let alone suck in my stomach anymore. In fact, I hardly recognized myself in the mirror. What had I become?

Here I was, a family man with a wonderful wife, two young girls, a nice home, and a satisfying career. But somehow I'd let my body go south. I ate whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted—and I seemed to be paying the price. I couldn't walk up the stairs or climb a ladder without feeling out of breath. I even avoided taking our dog for a walk or playing outside with my girls.

But during this time I was also serving as Second Reader in my branch Church of Christ, Scientist. This appointment involved dedicated study of the weekly Bible Lessons Found in the  Christian Science Quarterly . to prepare for each Sunday's sermon. As a result, I'd experienced a lot of spiritual growth, including a permanent healing of recurring migraines, improved employment, and confidence in public speaking. So I saw the weight gain and physical inactivity as another opportunity for prayer.
