YOUR QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Following the example set by the question-and-answer columns in the early Journals, when Mary Baker Eddy was Editor, this column will respond to general queries from Journal readers—such as the one above—with responses from Journal readers. It will not cover questions about how to interpret statements in Mrs. Eddy's writings. There's more information at the end of the column about how to submit questions.

YOUR QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

From the July 2005 issue of The Christian Science Journal

QUESTION: When a friend is facing a serious illness, what might one share of Christian Science?

A1 I find that sharing Christian Science with others starts with spiritualizing my own thinking and being aware of God's infinite presence. I like this form of prayer because it's not intrusive to others, especially if they haven't specifically asked me to pray for them. It's like a light that goes on in my consciousness. When I bring that light into a dark room, things brighten.

It's not that I don't offer some practical encouragement, though. When I visit with a sick friend, I'll likely say something upbeat, yet simple. I might also give them a copy a Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, which I explain has really helped me and so may others. But I stay focused on what I'm thinking, because my contribution lies in my own spiritual awareness. Often, things can start to improve even if the friend isn't consciously aware of it.
