I'D BEEN STRUGGLING with a sore foot for more than a week. For no apparent reason, this foot had become inflamed and quite painful, making it difficult to walk. Through prayer, I'd experienced some relief, but I still wasn't getting around normally. In fact, I couldn't wear my regular shoes and had given up my daily run.
I've come to trust prayer as a means to meet any challenge head on until it's resolved—and I've had many proofs of prayer's healing power over the years. But this time, doubt and discouragement crept in. I realized that I'd allowed myself to think that once the worst of a problem was over, I could just put up with a certain amount of discomfort. Realizing that I was thinking this way was a wake-up call, since my experience told me that prayer in Christian Science offers permanent results.
I decided to take a deeper look at the reports of healing I'd been reading in this magazine, as well as in the Christian Science Sentinel. I found myself thinking, "Well, that's great for those people, but why am I still battling this challenge?" Then, when I thought about it, I saw that all of the healings shared a common basis: the Christ. It dawned on me that what was missing from my prayers was a deeper understanding of the Christ.
