CHRISTIAN SCIENCE CHAPLAINS HAVE SERVED in the US...

From the May 2006 issue of The Christian Science Journal

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE CHAPLAINS HAVE SERVED in the US military since World War I. For many years, The Mother church oversaw a chaplain training program that prepared potential Christian Science chaplains for their ministry. The chaplaincy program, which at the time was supervised by the Clerk of The Mother Church, suspended operation in 1989. However, in May 2005, the program resumed under the auspices of the Committee on publication, the office that corrects public misstatements and misperceptions about Christian Science and its Discoverer and Founder, Mary Baker Eddy. Christian Science chaplains help correct similar impositions as they pertain to the United States Armed Forces. In 2005, Chaplain Colonel (Ret.) Janet Horton, of Ocala, Florida, was named The Mother Church's Endorser of Christian Science Chaplains. Among her duties, Colonel Horton acts liaison for Christian Science chaplains serving in US forces, and mentors trainees enrolled at the Boston University School of Theology, and other seminaries, who are preparing to become Christian Science chaplains. Christian Science chaplains currently serving in the US military include:

• Army Chaplain Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Wheatley, Ft. McPherson, GA

• Army Chaplain Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Cieply, Fort Lewis, WA
