UPWARD BOUND

From the May 2006 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In the months leading up to the hike, this arresting inquiry—how many gods are there?—had caused me to stop and make sure my actions and thoughts worshiped one God.

I HAD BEEN ASKED TO TEACH nature journaling for two weeks at an art, music, and writing retreat for adults in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. During the first week, I loved studying the Bible Lesson Found in the Christian Science Quarterly . on "Man," as it had many helpful things to say about not accepting limitations, which was the whole point of the retreat. I was there to help people do things they never thought they could do—or had been told at some point in their lives that they couldn't do.

After drawing and writing all week, I was invited to go on a hike with five other instructors on Saturday. Even though I have some hiking experience, I was totally unprepared for this excursion in terms of gear and supplies. But it appears that I had what I needed spiritually, which is what really counts.
