HIGH NOON

A CONVERSATION WITH CANDACE DU MARS

From the February 2008 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Little did Candace du Mars know that her life was about to change—forever—the day her little girl, Alice, a kindergartner at the time, came home after visiting a friend's Sunday School. Alice exclaimed that she'd found a new Sunday School, and Candace—or Candy as her friends call her—picked up on her daughter's enthusiasm and started tagging along to church. Before long, Candy became a regular at the local Christian Science branch church and read Science and Health, which resulted in a healing of eczema. And the rest, as they say, is history.

After leaving her career as a social studies teacher and debate coach, Candy entered the public practice of Christian Science healing in 1987 and became a teacher of Christian Science in 1991. She also lectured on Christian Science for ten years and spent three years in Boston, from 2001 to 2004, as First Reader of The Mother Church.

A lifetime resident of the Pacific Northwest, Candy now enjoys life in Fife, Washington, where she has a view of Mount Rainier from her patio. Because of the rainy climate, she loves to play board games with her family, and in her rare free time, either plays a few hands of bridge or dives into solving crossword puzzles. Candy and I talked recently about keeping a spiritual perspective on life—and about remembering to see ourselves and others at high noon. Curious? Find out what she's talking about in these excerpts from our conversation.
