IN THE YEARS FOLLOWING the passing of my first wife, feelings of doubt crept into my spiritual outlook. My life had become a vague compromise, with little of the sense of purpose and religious practice I'd been committed to previously.
In April of 2004, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. After a period of struggling with discomfort and to assuage the concern of my family, I sought medical advice. The physician who examined me referred me to a specialist, who confirmed the same findings and prescribed treatment.
At that point, I found my spiritual resolve strongly reawakened. I recall stating to the doctor, "I am a Christian Scientist and believe in the power of prayer. I'd like to have some time to treat this situation in my own way." The specialist replied that I could have six months, and then I should come back to see him.
