EVERYONE BELIEVES IN SOMETHING. It can be as basic as believing in one's own human existence, identity, and purpose. It can be as uncomplicated as the optimistic view that everything will eventually turn out in a good way. But sometimes believing is the pessimistic view that everything will eventually self-destruct without hope of redemption. Empty, illusionary doorways of believing—positive or negative—can keep an individual wandering in the realm of mortal thought where there is no answer to life issues higher than what the individual has outlined him or herself as real.
However, as soon as you open the door to the Bible you can feel exuding from within it a welcome to a much higher, uplifting concept of believing. The Bible takes you to a level above the human mind—to an inspired, spiritual level. The Bible invites the reader to believe, not in self or mere optimism or the inevitability of evil, but in God, the divine source of all that is real and good. This believing in God is neither "... a faltering nor a blind faith, but the perception of spiritual Truth," as Mary Baker Eddy described in her definition of believing in Science and Health (p. 582). Believing in God, the infinite Cause of all that is high and holy, brings us into a place where we experience security, safety, salvation. And reward.
The Bible not only invites us as spiritual seekers to believe, it demands that we do. And to have faith. But not through ignorance or blind faith. Scripture lifts the heart to an understanding of God as infinite Love, blessing His/Her children with all the rewards that a loving heavenly Father-Mother can bestow. In the book of Hebrews it says, "Without faith it is impossible to please him [God]; for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them the diligently seek him" (11:6)
