ABOUT FOUR YEARS AGO, I had a remarkable experience, a healing, that I would like to report. In the middle of the night I was seized with a great pain. As I remember, it went through my entire body, sort of gripping it, freezing it. I called a Christian Science practitioner and told her of my distress. She said, "I'll work," meaning that she would pray for me. The pain was so frightening, I thought I might expire. I had a couple of funny thoughts: Should I call my mother, maybe say goodbye? Should I put some clothes on, in case someone had to come in and find a body?
In the midst of these "funny" thoughts, I sought to pray—to affirm that my life was entirely in Spirit, not in matter at all. Then, after five minutes, maybe ten, God spoke to me. He spoke to me directly, as one person speaking to another. He said, "Don't worry, I have a plan for you." This statement was not directed to the physical condition; it was directed to something else. It was completely surprising, and wonderful. I had indeed been worried about the future—about family life, employment, health, and all the rest of it. And God's voice came to me, clear as day: "Don't worry, I have a plan for you."
Almost immediately, the pain broke and I suffered no more distress. That pain has never returned, and this episode—with God's statement at its center—has given me comfort and encouragement ever since.
