I WAS IN MY JUNIOR YEAR of college, and it was time to apply for internships. I didn't know exactly where I should work, but one thing was sure: I wasn't going where I went the previous summer!
Basically, I saw my last internship at a summer theater festival as a thankless job in which I didn't make any lasting friendships. So I sent out applications for several other internships at art organizations. With my résumé, I had no doubt I'd get in somewhere. But God must have had other plans. Even though I had excellent recommendations, I was rejected by all of the organizations, and I soon found myself on the phone with my bosses from the previous summer. Even though I had had a miserable experience, they really respected me and my work. I probably didn't sound too gracious over the phone, despite being offered a last-minute internship at this prestigious company.
