THE KIDS WERE IN BED. The meeting was over. Now, it was time for stargazing.
As a counselor at a children's summer camp for Christian Scientists, I looked forward to latenight walks back to my cabin alone. I took my time on the gravel road, thinking how this particular patch of sky—far removed from city lights—looked like a spillage of sequins above the sleeping camp. I scanned through the constellations until I found what I was looking for—the Big Dipper.
I certainly wasn't the first to revel in the Big Dipper. Found within the constellation Ursa Major, the Big Dipper has served as an ancient navigational tool and a source of great folklore. But for me, the Big Dipper had become a spiritual reminder.
