"THE HEALING POWER is Truth and Love, and these do not fail in the greatest emergencies" (Miscellaneous Writings 1883–1896, p. 5). This declaration by Mary Baker Eddy served as a pillar of light and truth for me during a very important phase of my life as a student of Christian Science.
During the winter of 2003, while living in a remote part of Wyoming, I collapsed twice while walking. The first time, I regained consciousness very quickly and was brought back to my home by a friend. I didn't think too much about the first incident, but a week later while on an errand for work, I stepped out of my friend's car, and as I was walking with her I collapsed once again and hit the hard ice. This time, I had a difficult time getting up and felt quite weak.
When I returned to work, I informed my manager about what had happened. Out of concern for me and in accordance with company policy, I was asked to go to the doctor right away to get examined. I complied with the request, and after some tests I was diagnosed with a severe and unusual form of anemia. I was also informed that my health was at risk. In fact, the medical team was very concerned about my condition and recommended an immediate blood transfusion. At this hospital, I had been a cofounder of a highly regarded multi-faith chaplaincy program, so the doctors and staff knew that I was a Christian Scientist. Due to the seriousness of my situation, the medical director of the hospital also met with me to explain further their medical diagnosis and the urgent need for a blood transfusion. The hospital director and staff respected me as a Christian Scientist, as someone who relies exclusively on prayer, so I was given the time and space to think about my options for treatment.
