Lives inspired by Mary Baker Eddy's example

Still serving Mary Baker Eddy

From the August 2011 issue of The Christian Science Journal

It’s hard to describe how grateful I am for Mary Baker Eddy and the Church she founded. Her teachings have defined my life since I came to Christian Science in high school, from a mainstream Protestant background.

After Mrs. Eddy’s discovery of Christian Science, some adherents left their personal lives behind for years to work as her secretaries, cooks, maids, and helpers. I’ve recently wondered, “How can I serve her today and best express my love and appreciation for all that she did?” This led me to ask myself, “What would a job application for work in her household look like today?” and, “What would the qualifications for employment be?” While reading We Knew Mary Baker Eddy and Twelve Years With Mary Baker Eddy, these qualities stood out as being requisite: sincerity, unselfishness, joy, spiritual vision, orderliness, promptness, alertness, accuracy, truthfulness, fidelity, consecration, humility, energy, spiritual inspiration.

These are high requirements that are still important for all who work in the Christian Science movement today.
