Mary Baker Eddy’s single-minded willingness and desire to obey God has anchored my own life. Although it was difficult for many of my friends to comprehend, I was raised in a household without medicine, and, much more important, without fear. Growing up in an atmosphere of trust in God’s care and goodness was the gift of Christian Science.
In early adolescence, I was faced with making this study of the Science of healing my own. I suffered an acute internal disorder and turned to the prayer and Christian Science treatment I had seen help all my family all my life. The complete healing, peace, and freedom that followed is something I will never forget. And the proof, conviction, and deep feeling of God’s love for me, as laid out in Mrs. Eddy’s book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, became my foundation.
Throughout high school and college, I was grateful for my parallel spiritual education and the ability to share Christian Science by inviting friends to our campus meetings and lectures, or by giving copies of the Christian Science Sentinel, The Christian Science Monitor, and the Journal to my friends. Christian Science provided a way to think morally, spiritually, and originally about relationships and activities—making me a more helpful friend. Mrs. Eddy’s strength in taking a completely original, God-directed approach to life became an inspiration for my own conduct.
