Church Alive

No Doubt About It, Church Is Alive!

. . . at least, judging from the numerous inspiring letters and articles the Journal receives every day from individuals all over the world. For example, Puneet Sharma, of India, whose Christian Science Society held one of the many Church Alive Summits inspired by the theme of this year’s Annual Meeting of The Mother Church.

Turn the page, and you’ll find thought-provoking excerpts from a session at the recent Boston Summit called “Services that Heal: Inspired Reading and Listening,” given by the Readers of The Mother Church.

Following that are articles—Church in Action—from Puneet and others who are truly witnesses to a revitalized, and yes—alive Church.

Church in Action

‘The symptoms disappeared’

From the September 2011 issue of The Christian Science Journal

More than once I have walked into a Christian Science church service with a problem and walked out with a solution. So this year, when I wasn’t feeling well prior to a Sunday service, I didn’t hesitate about going to the service expecting to be healed.

On this particular Sunday, I was visiting Boston and I was really looking forward to attending church at The Mother Church. But I awoke early in the morning feeling quite sick. I couldn’t swallow comfortably, plus I felt feverish and dizzy.

I immediately began to pray for myself. I recognized the closeness of my Father-Mother God’s presence. I thought of a Bible verse included in that week’s Christian Science Bible Lesson, which was to be read in church later that morning: “Your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him” (Matt. 6:8). This promise shifted my thinking in the right direction because it encouraged me to focus on God first. It pulled me away from endlessly analyzing the problem. It put me into a mode of listening for inspiration from God, divine Love.
