Walk right in

“Open to me the gates of righteousness: I will go into them, and I will praise the Lord.” (Psalms 118:19)

From the December 2012 issue of The Christian Science Journal

At first read, a person might simply pass over that verse—it could sound like just any other colorful, poetic sentence from the Bible. But when I’ve stopped to think it through, I’ve seen that it presents significant, meaningful, and helpful guidance for effective prayer.

“The gates of righteousness” could symbolize different things for different readers. For me, I’ve seen them as representing the angel messages that God gives to each one of us, revealing the breathtaking kingdom of God. These “gates” definitely sound heavenly, yet they’re anything but distant.

What I especially like about this Bible verse is how it describes what we do after the gates are opened. We “go into them.” In other words, we leave the place where we were and go into a new place. That signifies a clear mental shift.
