Appealing to a higher law

From the May 2014 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Scientific prayer as taught by Mary Baker Eddy in Christian Science is effective because it is based on divine laws. Healings based on these divine laws can come in many ways, such as with a simple, childlike love for God, or one’s absolute confidence in God’s allness.

But sometimes we become hypnotized into thinking that material laws, rather than scientific, God-ordained laws, are what govern us. And we need to face down that lie with vigor.

Having worked as a criminal defense attorney for several years, I find many analogies helpful in this regard. If I go into a legal court and appeal to a law, and it is not enforceable, it is not law. When we pray, we are not appealing to our human ability to make something happen. We are appealing to divine law—the law of God, Spirit. And God’s law is always reliable.
