Powerful concept

[Lois Herr, “Gratitude—finding the contours of good,” Journal, November 2018]

This article is wonderful. What a powerful concept to talk about gratitude as an instrument that helps us see the contours of good. With gratitude we can finally see that goodness is right where we are. The warmth and tenderness of the language are especially moving—they touch the heart.

Enhanced and broadened

[Ray Seddon, “The walk to Emmaus,” Journal, November 2018]

This poem was powerful for me. It completely restructures a scene many people have had to deal with—darkness, disappointment, despair. This poem shows how rather than treading that pathway alone, you have the Christ walking with you, as poignantly expressed in the walk to Emmaus. That story has always been a favorite, but this poem enhanced and broadened its meaning in a special way. Thank you.

Powerful testimony

[Deborah Master, “Deafness healed,” Journal, November 2018]

Deborah’s testimony is powerful! She showed such conviction in the healing power of Christian Science. Her willingness to plunge “beneath the material surface of things, and [find] the spiritual cause,” as Mary Baker Eddy says in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures (p. 313), is so evident in her experience.

What stood out to me was her study of our textbooks, Science and Health and the Bible, along with her deep, introspective work with gratitude. It acted as a refining agent in her thought and body, removing the dross and leaving only the gold—man’s true nature as God’s image.

Thank you

What a special article by Judith Hardy Olson (“Pondering the Bible’s prophecies, promises, and proofs heals,” Journal, November 2018). I, too, have made a practice of noting prophecies, promises, and proofs as I study the Christian Science Bible Lessons. But I was unaware of Mrs. Eddy’s statement about these “three p’s.”

Mark Raffles’s “Under Principle’s jurisdiction” offered solid spiritual facts that helped with a physical challenge, even though it was about a financial compliance issue. Christianly scientific truths have infinite application!

Thank you to both writers and to the editors for a fine issue.
