The first thing I noticed when I began to study the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, was that I began to have new insights into the nature of God. As I thought deeply about these new insights, God became more real to me—as infinite Spirit—and matter less real. And, surprisingly, I found myself suddenly healed of a physical condition that had bothered me for a couple of years.
That’s what happens when hearts hungry to understand God study Science and Health: They experience a spiritualization of thought, and healing is a natural effect.
The revelation from God that healed Mrs. Eddy flowed from a new understanding of the Bible, and the Science she discovered in its sacred pages enabled her to heal others according to fixed rules—the laws of God. Knowing this Science had to be shared with all humanity, she labored long and hard so the living, healing Word of God would shine through the words she used in writing Science and Health. It was supremely important to her to correctly convey the spiritual message of the Scriptures—the Truth Christ Jesus had taught and practiced. Consequently, the human language in Science and Health became the servant to the living Word of God, to bring spiritual understanding, physical healing, and Christly character transformation to the reader.
