When divine Love melts grief

From the February 2022 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In the seventh chapter of Luke in the Bible, Christ Jesus compassionately healed a widow’s grief by restoring her only son to life, near the gate of the city Nain (see verses 11–16). In the culture of the time, women relied upon male relatives for their social and economic well-being, and widows could be left destitute without this support.

Jesus’ decision to reject death as necessary, in order to tenderly care for someone who was considered downtrodden in society, provides humanity with a definite example of God’s love. This love is promised in Isaiah: “As one whom his mother comforteth, so will I comfort you; and ye shall be comforted in Jerusalem” (66:13).

These days, news reports constantly provide humanity with many reasons to grieve. Or we may be dealing with grief that feels a bit closer to home. How should we respond? By turning to God in prayer, we can gain a spiritual view of God’s loving, compassionate control over all creation. This response is an effective way to face grief and brings healing and renewal.
