Quick regeneration

From the November 2023 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Several years ago, as I got out of bed one morning and began to walk downstairs, I felt discomfort, slight stiffness, and pain in the area of my ankles and lower legs. The first thought I had was that I should walk around a bit to loosen up; and then the word degenerative came to mind. I recognized this as a word I had heard over the years associated with aging.

Because, as is my usual practice, I had been praying before getting out of bed that morning, listening for and prayerfully affirming various Bible-based truths that I had learned through my study and practice of Christian Science, I was able to counter this word with this idea: that God’s activity is regenerative.

Regeneration, or newness of life, is the only action that God causes, for me and everyone. I realized that as a child of God, I had a divine right to claim complete regeneration right where pain seemed to be. This is because God is Spirit, as the Scriptures say, and we are made in God’s likeness—spiritual. Nothing spiritual can be painful or degenerative. As I walked into the room downstairs, my legs were functioning normally and free of pain. There was no need to “loosen up”!
