In 1982 I got a job with the Uruguay branch of SOS Children’s Villages, a nongovernmental organization dedicated to the care of orphaned and abandoned children around the world. While working there I had my first healing in Christian Science.
At the time, I was in charge of a house of eight children in the children’s village, located in the capital city of Montevideo. These children would go to the local Christian Science church with me on Sundays.
One Sunday after church, my nephew joined us at the village. As I was preparing lunch for everyone in the house, I turned on the gas oven in the kitchen and put in a roast. Suddenly, I smelled a strange odor (what I later realized was gas), and went to check the oven, which had turned off. As I approached it, I lit a match with the intention of reigniting the pilot light.
