The Scriptures are filled with promises; one of the more precious of these is that of the advent of the Messiah, who came to bring salvation for all mankind. This promise was given of old to men of great spiritual vision, who caught glimpses of the true nature of life and of the creator as Spirit.
As the history of the Hebrews unfolds, many references are made to the descendants of Jacob, also called Israel, who gave their names to "the twelve tribes of Israel" ( Gen. 49:28 ); and it is of interest to note their characteristics as outlined in Jacob's astute and final evaluation of the qualities and fortunes of his sons.
In the seventeenth chapter of I Kings we read of the widow woman to whom the prophet Elijah was divinely directed when he was in need of sustenance. There were other widows in Zarephath, but this woman was ready to share in Elijah's rich understanding of spiritual substance.
For one to live and act confidently, feeling sureness about his future, is indispensable to his happiness. The confidence which derives from egotism, human personality, or mere optimism is shallow and shakable.
The Christian Scientist has many opportunities for blessing mankind in the course of the daily round. The joy, serenity, and love which he acknowledges as his God-given possessions harmonize his relationships with others, and they calm confusion and uncertainty in the common routine.
A New student of Christian Science may joyfully accept the emphasis this Science places on the first chapter of Genesis as the record of spiritual actuality and begin at once to apply its truths to his daily experience. He may recognize particular circumstances as opportunities to rouse himself, that is, to replace false Adam-dream views with what he knows of spiritual creation.
During these days of global struggle for the minds of men, when misguided nations would impose their unrighteous and immoral concepts upon the world, the inspired messages of the Bible sustain and encourage its readers with assurances of the triumph of good. James said ( 4:7 ): "Submit yourselves.
Are we Christian Scientists of the twentieth century pursuing an understanding of Science because of what it will do for us? Or are we studying Science because we realize that it reveals Christ, Truth— "the living bread which came down from heaven" ( John 6:51 )—and demonstrates that Life is Spirit, God, the All-in-all? If the former, then our thought is centered upon that false sense of existence which believes itself physical, human, and apart from God, and we are pursuing our own human welfare rather than following the Christ. But if the latter, then we are daily glimpsing—and yearning to know more of—the new heaven and new earth seen by St.
