LISTEN AND HEAR

From the September 1964 issue of The Christian Science Journal

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE teaches that true listening and hearing are not material but spiritual. Constant, conscious communion with God, divine Mind, enables one to listen for and hear His voice and follow His unerring direction. Mortal belief says that hearing is dependent upon organic construction and that one hears through the medium of the ear.

Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health (p. 213): "The ear does not really hear. Divine Science reveals sound as communicated through the senses of Soul—through spiritual understanding." In another paragraph beginning on the same page she states, "Before human knowledge dipped to its depths into a false sense of things, —into belief in material origins which discard the one Mind and true source of being,—it is possible that the impressions from Truth were as distinct as sound, and that they came as sound to the primitive prophets."

Students of Christian Science, true to what they have learned from their study and application of this Science, are spiritually equipped to follow the Way-shower, Christ Jesus, who, speaking of "the shepherd of the sheep," said (John 10:3-5): "The sheep hear his voice. . . . And the sheep follow him. . . . And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers."
