AN understanding thought enables us to know what to do and how to do it. An understanding heart enables us to do it in a warm and lovely spirit. Basic to our understanding of our fellowmen is our understanding of God. As our understanding of God increases and the claims of good more often and more fully occupy our consciousness, the resulting harmony in our lives is inevitable, and our view of man is enlightened.
Mrs. Eddy states in the textbook, Science and Health (p. 167), "Our proportionate admission of the claims of good or of evil determines the harmony of our existence, —our health, our longevity, and our Christianity."
In pursuing the way of the understanding heart, we do not wander down the path of vainglory, become entangled in the hidden snares of human superiority, or bruise ourselves against the sharp rocks of self-condemnation. The path of understanding seems narrow and difficult to discern at times because of the blurring intrusions of self-interest or because of the trials that shadow the path and cause it to appear steep and rough. But the Christian Scientist finds that as he seeks God's guidance, he can perceive it. And with it always is the dear assurance, supporting care, and tender comfort of the Father's presence.
